"Critical thinking" means different things in the introductory psychology text market. To Wade and Tavris, it consists of encouraging students to go beyond the most apparent or intuitive interpretation of psychological research findings to probe deeper, ask second-order questions, consider alternative interpretations, and eventually (in true dialectical fashion) come to a deeper and better understanding of the phenomenon as a result. Which is precisely what we seek to encourage in critical thinking exercises.
There are weaknesses to this book, including the fact that it can be text-dense and the organizational structure is not ideal. But it is a text I have used for years without regret.
