Being a professor of literature at the college level I would highly recommend this nationally-known novel in any American Literary course. Steinbeck's use of basic literary elements in the story are an easy base to teach such concepts as foreshadowing, character development, allusion, theme, and many others. Even basic students of literature could follow these concepts and it is an easy transition to discovering the deeper meanings in literature.
By reading the novel, students can explore the microcosm of the two worker's plight set against a system of bias and prejudices.
